The St Leger Festival at Doncaster - best bets for day three the Friday

Bit more involvement for me today having had just the two bets over the opening two days of the St Leger Festival; annoyingly they’ve finished second and third. I have three for Friday and all at fair prices so fingers crossed for a nice profitable start to the weekend.

It’s the two-year-old speedballs at 2.40 for the Group Two 5f Bombardier Flying Childers Stakes. A few in here with chances including expensive purchase The Lir Jet for Qatar Racing and the filly Sacred who I tipped when beaten in the Group Two 6f Sky Bet Lowther Stakes at York. I put up Steel Bull at Goodwood when he won the 5f G.3 Molecomb Stakes having been visually impressed with his win on debut at Naas. He got in a bit of a mess in the 6f G.1 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh after that where he hit his head in the stalls; trainer explained afterwards the colt actually broke two teeth! With the start being a mess, and the fact he was last off the bridle and simply appeared to struggle over the extra furlong, he can be forgiven that mediocre run. The booking of Jim Crowley has to be seen as a positive and I would expect to see him covered up early here and burst through late to win. I have the 11-2.

At 3.15 they face 2m2f for the Group Two bet365 Doncaster Cup Stakes. Revolver was gelded over the winter at the end of his two-year-old season and stepped-up markedly in trip on his return to action as a three-year-old; he literally hasn’t stopped winning since. He arrives here with six 1’s next to his name, all gained in the last three months! This is a huge step-up in class from the races he has been competing in but as a three-year-old he gets a chunk of weight from his rivals and who knows how much more he has in the tank. On official ratings the 12lb he gets from the likes of Eagles By Day and Spanish Mission make him weighted to win and if there is a bit more to come yet he could do it hard held! I think he is well worth a speculative punt, should've taken the 6's earlier this week, but I am on at 11-4 in the hope that old shrewdie Sir Mark Prescott has left a bit more work on him yet for a race such as this.

At 3.45 we have the Listed 7f bet365 Flying Scotsman Stakes and I think the Charlie Appleby runner is the one for this. One Ruler is by Dubawi and the second foal of Fintry a winner of a couple of G.3’s in her career with plenty of winners on the dam side of the pedigree. The colt was a fine second on debut over seven furlongs at Sandown behind Etonian who went on to win the G.3 Solario Stakes next before winning, making every yard, over the same track and trip in August. He comes for this rather than the G.2 Champagne Stakes on Saturday and similar positive tactics to used last time can see him win go in again. Another that was bigger earlier in the week I got on at 7-4 this morning.

Be lucky
