The horse racing Friday 21st February 2020

I had two potential bets pencilled in for Friday but as it turns out I won’t be having either; one is too short and the other one I am prepared to watch as I have had my finger burnt before.

I put up Discovery Island on his seasonal debut earlier this month at Newcastle and he was backed as if defeat was out of the question; sadly, it wasn’t as he finished third! Cheekpieces are on for the first time in the 6.45 at Wolverhampton the Betway Novice Stakes. Simply put he is the form pick but is becoming expensive to follow, beaten favourite all four starts!

I have also tipped up the Charlie Appleby trained colt Never Alone before and mentioned then he was a 1,200,000 Guineas yearling and is a half-brother to Flat winners Legatissimo, Another Cocktail, Gumriyah and Smoulder. He didn't perhaps make the start to his career expected but ran out a wide-margin winner of his fourth start over 9.4f on Wolverhampton's Tapeta last month and remains one that should continue to progress. He is strongly fancied to win the Ladbrokes Football Acca Boosty Handicap at 7.15 but was odds-on first show Thursday lunchtime!

I have never been one to bet for the sake of it and sometimes you just have to sit on your hands, in the long run you will have better results. The good news is a few punts for the weekend are planned so stayed tuned.

Be lucky
