The Cambridgeshire Meeting at Newmarket best bets for day one Thursday 27th September

The Cambridgeshire meeting at HQ Newmarket takes centre stage on the Rowley Mile for the next three days. They get underway on Thursday with an eight-race card including the Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes and Listed Jockey Club Rose Bowl. There are some top-notch races to look forward to over the next three days and all being well a few quid to be won.

The 2yo heats early on Thursday are best watched with the future in mind and the handicaps look like punting minefields to me.

The Group Three Tattersalls Stakes at 3.35 over seven furlongs is a 2yo heat you can have a bet in and the one to be on is the Roger Varian trained Prince Eiji. The chestnut colt arrives one from one having won on debut at Ascot looking like a nice prospect; the form of the race is looking pretty solid already as well. Open to any amount of improvement I liked the way he went about things at Ascot and having cost a cool 2.6 million guineas at Tattersalls Book 1 I expect Varian and Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum are hopeful he proves top class. Grab the 5-2.

Old friend to Triple G Sheikhzayedroad goes in the Listed Rose Bowl over two-miles and the nine-year-old should be backed at 11-4. Third in the G.2 Doncaster Cup last time, I tipped him there at 7-2, compensation awaits this afternoon. The 3-y-os look likely to prove the biggest threat but hopefully the old veteran has a little too much for the young guns just yet.

Be lucky
