Best bets for the horse racing Thursday 1st September

A frustratingly quiet week thus far as the only horse I fancied, and tipped, Appointed One was a non-runner at Wolverhampton on Wednesday.

I had three bets in mind for Thursday, all Godolphin owned, two trained by Charlie Appleby and one by Andre Fabre. One is odds-on and unbackable in the shape of Castle Way at Haydock. He  was no match for Moulton Paddocks stablemate Lenormand in a mile maiden at Newmarket last month that I suggested would be worth a look if for no other reason the three Godolphin runners in it. The horse that was third that day has won since and the form looks pretty solid suggesting Castle Way should prove too strong for this field. The Bookies agree and the colt is 4-9! The other two bets can be had though.

Best bet for the horse racing from Salisbury

I will begin in Wiltshire where I fancy one for the mile Byerley Stud Novice Stakes at 2.20 in the medieval cathedral city of Salisbury. Tabaretta actually ran better than his finishing position of ninth suggests on debut at Sandown over seven recently; found some trouble when the race got going and was eased when his chance was clearly gone. On breeding you would expect him to get 10-12f next year so this steadily rising track will hopefully suit and supply a decent test of stamina. The son of Dubawi is worth an investment at 3-1. There has been a little cash for Circle Of Fire and that one is feared most.

Best bet for the horse racing from Longchamp

Over at Longchamp the race I am interested in is the 1m7f Group Three Prix Gerald de Geoffre at 6.25. Trained by Andre Fabre for Godolphin Galashiels bids to maintain his progressive profile as he steps up to Group class and up in trip for this. The colt has won three of his four starts over shorter distances, including a game victory in the 1m4f Listed Grand Prix de Clairefontaine at the end of July. It is a step into the unknown but on breeding there is enough stamina on the page to suggest he could stay and they rarely go a full out gallop from the off in France and as none of these have any form over the trip I don’t suppose they will here.  I am on this morning at 5-2
