Best bets for the horse racing this Bank Holiday weekend at Goodwood
It’s a decent card at Goodwood Saturday on paper with pattern races and the customary tricky handicaps at the West Sussex venue. They also race on Saturday at Newmarket and Windsor as well as a huge Ten race card up at Redcar. For me the whole weekend of racing offers quantity rather than quality though and I have in fact had just three bets. I am, it has to be said, very confident in both Saturday bets provided the British summer weather doesn’t balls things up for me and the Sunday punt has a very good chance.
At 1.50 we have the Group Three Ladbrokes Prestige Stakes for the two-year-old fillies. Pomelo stands out to my eyes and certainly looked a potentially a very nice filly when winning on debut at Newbury last month. It wouldn’t appear she beat anything that good but it was the way she did it. Juddmonte Farm bred by Dubawi out of G.1 winning mare Emulous (owned by Abdullah) she should be above average and her half-sister Desirous (ran in the famous Abdullah silks also) won at this track. She looks more than capable of taking this step up in class in her stride. I am on with Power at 11-5 as of Friday evening.
At 3.35 it is the Group Two Celebration Mile at Goodwood and I am on Benbatl at 11-4 and ante-post punt I took earlier in the week. I have been praying for drying weather conditions ever sine and the weather Gods having been toying with me somewhat but it appears the ground is drying and no rain is forecast for Saturday. Despite the Group One penalty he is still clear on official ratings and I think a solid bet as long as it has dried up enough – soft going is the major concern as he probably won’t run if too soggy under hoof. Hopefully the sun will shine on the righteous!
D’bai is one I have talked of several times over recent seasons and the Godolphin owned six-year-old may run at Goodwood on Sunday in the Group Three 7f Ladbrokes Supreme Stakes at 3.35. He has been in better races than this down the years including when down the field behind stablemate Space Blues in the G.2 Lennox Stakes over track and trip last time. On his day he would be too good for this line-up and he has a great record over seven furlongs which appears his ideal. He will be my Sunday afternoon punt.
Be lucky
