Best bets for the horse racing Saturday 3rd June 2023 - Derby day

The Derby very much takes centre stage on Saturday and I have dealt with the big race over on the Classics page. Although there is plenty of horse racing this weekend here in the UK I am not overly involved on Saturday or Sunday.

Hopefully it's all about quality rather than quantity from Triple G this weekend; I did find the winner of the Oaks yesterday which was handy and for once didn't find Frankie and his flying dismount to annoying :o)

Best bet for the horse racing at Epsom

The Group Three 1m½f Betfred Diomed Stakes at 12.50 is the first race of interest to me on Saturday over at Epsom. Highland Avenue hasn’t actually won since 2021 but the five-year-old looks to have a great chance to get back in the winning enclosure here. He has been in with much better than he faces here of late and was far from disgraced when third in the 1m2f G.3 Gordon Richards Stakes behind stable mate Adayar last time out; Anmaat (2nd) franked that form winning the G.1 Prix d'Ispahan next time out. The slight drop back in trip should suit and I am on at 7-4.

Best bet for the horse racing at Doncaster

I noted Charlie Appleby has sent Star Of Mystery up to Doncaster to make debut in the 6½f British EBF Ruby Jubilee Maiden Fillies' Stakes at 2.50; James Doyle is up there to ride. By Kodiac, who is well known for imparting speed in his offspring, she is out of Mistrusting a Listed winner over 6f in her day who has had four fouls race to date, all winners rated 90+, G.1 winner Althiqa being the best of them. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if this one turned out a Group horse in time and she can get her career off to a flying start by winning this. I have 4-1 early.

Be lucky
