Best bets for the horse racing Saturday 2nd September

It is a strange weekend ahead with most of the top-class action overseas in France, Germany and America. Despite the plethora of opportunities on offer I am being somewhat selective with just three bets Saturday. It is surely significant that William Buick rides at Chester rather than Sandown, where Charlie Appleby has Aablan running in the Group Three Solario Stakes, and the reason looks to be Military Order in the Listed 1m6f Caa Stellar Chester Stakes at 3.20. The colt is odds-on though and unbackable. My fancies for the afternoon follow.

Best bets for the horse racing at Sandown Park

The race of interest over at Esher is the mile Group Three Virgin Bet Atalanta Stakes at 2.25. I have mentioned Coppice more than once this season but haven't actually tipped her. She has been coming along nicely all season and  was far from disgraced when tried in G.1 company over a mile in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket last time. She is the best of the three-year-olds in the line-up and getting the weight for the older fillies and mares looks to have a chance to get back to winning ways. I have the 5-1 early.

The 7f Group Three Virgin Bet Solario Stakes has some decent juveniles in the line-up as you would expect, three unbeaten thus far, and some of these could be lining-up in the big autumn races in a few weeks time. The aforementioned Aablan will have James Doyle in the saddle with Buick at Chester. He won his maiden at HQ in the style of one that should go on as his career progresses and has to be shortlisted. Starlore also won on debut, over this track and trip back in July, having to battle to win by a nose. The from doesn't look too shabby with Arabian Crown (trained by Charlie Appleby) in third who was perhaps given a little too much to do late that day having won twice since including at Listed level. Mortlake appeared to hate the soft ground on debut and won nicely enough on his second start at Leicester so is also considered, especially with the yard bang in form. Aablan has all the entries you would want to see for the autumn and the race he won at HQ is one the team at Moulton paddocks have started some of their best in down the years in suggesting they like him. They would know all about Starlore from the Sandown run and the fact they are happy to take the colt on with this one I see as another positive. I am on at 3-1 this morning.

The other race of interest to me is the 7f Virgin Bet Maiden Fillies' Stakes at 4.10. Classical Song will be popular I tipped Beautiful Love on debut at HQ when she was third having been slowly away and not getting the breaks in running finishing as if she had more to give. She has to be shortlisted. I am going with the raider from Ballydoyle though. I also tipped Classical Song on debut when she was second at Glorious Goodwood; one of many seconds I tipped that week! She's a daughter of Lope De Vega, the French 2,000 Guineas and Derby winner, out of Cottonmouth, a G.3 winner in her racing career who has produced some nice one. All six of her siblings have been winners and, as mentioned earlier, the yard of Ralph Beckett is in decent form. She was far from knocked about at Goodwood when taking second and looked a guaranteed winner in waiting. She also has all the entries for later in the year you would expect to see. I am on at 10-11 this morning.

Be lucky
