Best bets for the horse racing New Years Day 2019

There is plenty to enjoy on New Year's day as they race at Catterick, Cheltenham, Exeter, Fakenham and Musselburgh over the obstacles. Amongst the Jumps meetings, they go on the Fibresand at Southwell again and that is where I am concentrating. Prices are not available at the time of writing so grab the best you can when the satchel swingers chalk-up. 

They charge down the straight five for the Betway Sprint Handicap at 1.45. Ornate has been in with some big guns down the years and the six-year-old looks to me to be on a very attractive mark for this. The gelding looked in good health when going close over C&D 11 days ago, I like a bit of course form here, and should show these a clean pair of heels. 

At 2.20 they go over 7f course. Angel Palanas has a good record here, four-time course winner, and drawn in stall three is boxed to get out and front-run which he likes to do. Off a rating of 81 it would require a career-best effort but the gelding has been thriving of late and could well do it. 

They face a mile in the Follow Sun Racing On Twitter Handicap at 2.55 and I have another that all being well should be up the pointed end throughout. Tagur should be able to get in a prominent position out of five as most inside him don’t have too much early speed. Another that has been thriving of late the chestnut will need to improve again but should be able to.
