Best bets for the horse racing Friday 2nd September

Hopefully we'll have horse racing with no interruptions from any other animals on Friday after a swarm of bees descended on Worcester on Wednesday forcing two fences to be omitted from the opening race and an escaped sheep delayed racing at Sedgefield on Thursday!

I am all about Charlie Appleby on Friday, the master of Moulton Paddocks is having another great season and no apologies are made for tipping another of his – unfortunately the one I tipped yesterday was second.

Best bet for the horse racing at Ascot

City Of Kings was entered for two races at Ascot (one Friday, one Saturday) and goes for the 7f Charbonnel et Walker British EBF Maiden Stakes at 2.35 on the Friday. With William Buick having an afternoon off, he rides at Kempton in the evening, Adam Kirby takes over in the saddle. The son of Kingman was an eye-catching fifth of twelve over 7f at Sandown last month having reared at the start and got away slowly he made plenty of late progress to finish as close as he did. All being well he’ll be better out of the stalls here and can gain his first victory in this. He is no price sadly but I am on at 5-4 overnight with Power who were biggest at the time. There's a number of big yards and big connections involved in this so it’s probably a race worth a watch with the future in mind. Interesting debutants include Paddington over from Ballydoyle and Lion Tamer for Qatar Racing for the yard of the Gosdens.

Horse racing at Kempton Park

I mentioned Buick rides at Kempton Park and the one Charlie Appleby has sent there, and the reason the Champion elect is in Sunbury-on-Thames I assume, is Bold Act in the Celtic Contractors British Stallion Studs EBF Restricted Novice Stakes at 6.50. I backed him on debut when second to his stablemate and mentioned him, though he was unbackable at long odds-on, when he won at Newmarket three-weeks ago as he liked. The colt is fancied to be able to concede the 7lb penalty against this field with the step-up to a mile expected to suit; sadly he is odds-on overnight and unbackable again but make a note of the name.

Be lucky
