Best bets for day two of the St Leger Festival Doncaster

Day two at Doncaster and the St Leger Festival is Ladies Day and it is all about the fillies for Triple G and my two bets. I am going up on Tuesday, before the Wednesday bets, as I am on already.

The Group Two 1m6½f DFS Park Hill Stakes for Fillies & Mares is due off at 2.40. Enbihaar has headed the market in the build-up having won the 1m4f G.2 Yorkshire Oaks and 1m6f G.2 Lillie Langtry Stakes on her last two starts. She does though have the give the 3yo’s a bundle of weight under the race conditions and that might leave her vulnerable. Dame Malliot is a lightly raced three-year-old on the up having won at Listed and Group Two level on her last two starts. That last win was over 1m4f in the heavy at Deauville suggesting the trip won’t be a problem and Frankie Dettori is in the saddle again. She gets 10lb off the jolly under race conditions and with likely further improvement on only her fifth start she is the one for me and I grabbed 5-2 Tuesday morning.

The Group Two William Hill May Hill Stakes at 3.45 sees some nice young fillies’ line-up. Cloak Of Spirits won well over 7f on debut but possibly had the run of the race getting a nice lead up the centre of the track before going clear. A couple have come out of the race and won since but at a much lower level. G.3 Sweet Solera Stakes winner West End Girl is respected as is G.3 Prestige Stakes winner Boomer. I put up two from the yard of Charlie Appleby yesterday and I like his Alpen Rose who won over track and tip on the soft last month having finished second on her debut. Brett Doyle was never hard at work on her, more hands and heels, and even though she idled a little she never looked likely to get beat. This is a step-up of course but the €750,000 yearling is bred to be decent and has Group One entries come the autumn. I have jumped on at the 7-1 that is about Tuesday as I think that is too big.

Be lucky
