Best bets for day three of the July Meeting at Newmarket plus the Ascot Mile

It is the final day of the July meeting Saturday over at Newmarket plus a decent card at Ascot, they also race at Newcastle and Salisbury. It’s been a dry day Friday with sunny spells forecast Saturday so we should be back in pretty decent racing ground. I am having just the three bets Saturday afternoon in a rather hectic forty minutes or so.

At 3.00 over at HQ we have the 7f Group Two Superlative Stakes with some potentially very good two-year-olds lining-up. You are guessing a bit as to how they will progress but I have to back one from what I have seen. Master Of The Seas won on debut in a 7f novice heat on the Rowley Mile with the second that day subsequently going on to win a race at Haydock recently giving the form a fair look. By Dubawi out of Firth Of Lorne the colt is a half-brother to seven winners, several at Pattern level. At 5-1 he is the one I think is best suited for the job today. Hudson River, by Galileo out of Meccas Angel is an obvious danger having won a Curragh maiden whilst Doncaster winner Seventh Kingdom is also one to watch.

Off to Ascot where at 3.15 we have the Betfred Summer Mile Stakes over at Ascot. There is simply only one horse I can back for this and it is Lord Tennyson at 12-1. The draw might have been kinder on paper but it’s not a huge field so shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Take a look back at the Hunt Cup if you get a chance, he got not luck in running at all and Dettori pretty much gave up riding when his chance was gone. I have backed him on all three of his runs to date, he was an easy winner on debut he was perhaps unlucky to bump into a bang in form Maries Diamond on his second start before his luckless run in the Hunt Cup. I have said before Gosden and the Godolphin team must have seen something in him keeping him in training until four without him running. I am convinced they think they can win some decent prizes with the gelding who is open too improvement yet naturally and hopefully it can start with this. The aforementioned Maries Diamond is an obvious threat as is Mohaather.

Race of the day is the Group One 6f Darley July Cup Stakes at 3.35 back at Newmarket. I think this is a pretty open affair with several in with chances including Hello Youmzain and Sceptical amongst the older brigade. Three-year-olds have a good recent record and get the 6lb allowance. Of the four that line-up I like the look of Threat dropping back to sprint distances. The chestnut travelled well in the G.1 St James's Palace but clearly didn’t stay the mile. I think he could get a nice tow into this from the likes of Lord Of The Lodge and Hello Youmzain and take advantage of the weight-for-age allowance late on. I have the 9-1.

Be lucky
