Best Bets For Day One The Cambridgeshire Meeting At Newmarket

The Cambridgeshire meeting gets underway at Newmarket today and we have three days of quality horse racing to look forward to. I fancy two on the first day.

The Group Three Tattersalls Somerville Stakes at 3.45 sees some potentially good’uns lining-up but there isn’t much form to go on in most cases. I am going with one based on breeding and potential as much as actual form in the shape of Elarqam who is certainly bred to be a good horse, by Frankel out of Attraction. He went well clear of his field at York on debut over seven furlongs on the good to soft and the form has a solid look as the third and fourth, the only two to run since, both won next time. A 1,600,000gns yearling big things are naturally expected and I am taking a chance at the 7-4 that is available that he can win this before moving on to bigger prizes as his career progresses. Tip Two Win won on debut, and won again at the forth time of asking when taking the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes at Doncaster upped to seven furlongs last time. That’s the best actual form on show and he is feared.

For the Listed Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes at 4.20 I was thinking of backing Mount Moriah if he came here but he hasn’t. With question marks about Higher Power and Winning Story who have both been a little off form in their latest runs and Nearly Caught having to shoulder 9-6 this might be a good opportunity for UAE King to notch his first win at this level. The three-year-old has been progressing nicely all season and with the weight advantage he gets here and the stable being in form the colt is a tentative pick at 3-1.
