Best bets for day one of the Craven Meeting at Newmarket

Horse racing returns to HQ Newmarket today with the bet365 Craven Meeting on the Rowley Mile getting underway this afternoon. The three-day fixture was first staged in 1771 with the feature race the Group Three bet365 Craven Stakes on the Thursday of the meeting, which traditionally acts as a trial for the first Classic of the season, the following month’s QIPCO 2000 Guineas run, of course, over the same course and distance. It feels as though spring has finally sprung, though it should be noted the going is soft following the recent rain.

The first race of interest to me is the opener at 1.50 the 7f Bet365 British Ebf Conditions Stakes. Charlie Appleby and William Buick got me a winner last night at Kempton and hopefully they can do the job again with Majestic Pride in this. A half-brother to seven winners including top-class, and Triple G favourite, Farhh who didn't mind getting his toe in. At 2-1 early I think he can get the day off to a winning start for us.

The race of the day is the 1m1f Group Three Bet365 Earl Of Sefton Stakes. Hopefully it is Appleby and Buick again as I am on Ottoman Fleet at 7-4 early. I should say it could be a very good day for Moulton Paddocks as they have a few with chances but this one might be their best chance of the lot. He has won here a couple of times, albeit over a furlong longer, and the gelding arrives match fit from some solid efforts at the Dubai Carnival. Stable mate Blue Trail is also be match-fit from runs in Meydan and has to be feared whilst Poker Face could be anything as they say stepping up in class though this looks a tough first assignment at this level.

Be lucky
