Best bets for day one of the Cambridgeshire meeting at Newmarket

The main event for the next few days is the Cambridgeshire meeting at HQ Newmarket on the Rowley Mile with racing Thursday, Friday and Saturday. You know autumn is arriving when this meeting comes around.

Note, Newmarket’s Real Ale Festival runs throughout the three-day meeting and is a nice addition to the day out! On the first of the three days, we have an eight race card including the Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes and Listed Jockey Club Rose Bowl. They are the two races I have fancies in.

The 7f Group 3 Tattersall Stakes is the main event on day one at 3.35. Some nice two-year-olds line-up with Lord Of The Lodge top-rated following his second in the 6f G.2 Gimcrack last time. He showed early zip in that and had an uncontested lead and I think he may be flattered by the result plus this is the extra furlong. Wichita represents Ballydoyle and Ryan Moore rides. The colt won with a bit up his sleeve over 7f on debut and then went down by only half-a-length in the 7f Listed Flying Scotsman at Doncaster last time to Molatham. That looks fair form bearing in mind the only horse to beat Molatham so far is Mums Tipple, the second favourite for the G.1 Middle Park at the weekend! He stays the trip and with the rain around this is likely to be a testing seven furlongs plus there is likely a bit more improvement to come from him yet. I have a bit of the top of the head 9-4.

The Listed two-mile Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes at 4.10 should go to Cesarewitch and Northumberland Plate winner Withhold back at a trip that suits the six-year-old. A little give in the ground won’t inconvenience him and I can see him making every one of the 3,520 yards. The bookies agree with me and he is a shade odds-on at 5-6; I don't like tipping up that short but I do think he is a good thing.

Be lucky
