Best bet for the horse racing Wednesday 2nd March

A quick glance down the list of racecards for Wednesday and you could be forgiven for thinking it fairly standard fare, and most of it is. That said, there is a race on the Polytrack at Kempton Park in the evening that is well worth a look.

Best bet for the horse racing at Kempton Park

The  'Road To The Kentucky Derby' Conditions Stakes over a mile at 7.00 looks a decent little race with Harrow from the yard of Andrew Balding setting the standard off the back of his third in the G.3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes last September behind Modern Games. Not seen since has has a hood on for the first time here stepping up in trip; it is also his first go on the surface. He is in my notebook and the early season aim was originally the Saudi Derby according to the trainer so this is perhaps a slight lowering of the sights. I am taking on the jolly with one I have tipped before, and another from the norebook, in the shape of Blue Trail. I tipped the Charlie Appleby trained colt on debut when second at Newcastle over their straight mile in January to more experienced stable mate Stormy Ocean; under what I described at the time as an educational ride from Paul Mulrennan. I also wanted to tip him at Southwell later the same month but the world and their wife knew about him then and he was odds-on, winning comfortably. By unbeaten champion two-year-old Teofilo he is out of Pietrafiore (Dubawi) who was a winner on the All-weather at Wolverhampton for Appleby in her racing career as well as on turf in France when moving to the yard of Henri-Alex Pantall. There are plenty of winners in the family. Team Godolphin have the inside track on the jolly through Modern Games and I see it as a tip in itself that they are happily taking on Harrow with this far more inexperienced colt. I have taken the 2-1 overnight, missed the 9-4 that was briefly about, as he is already shorter with many sites.

Tyrrhenian Sea would have also been tipped but he is odds-on in the 5.30 stepping up to 1m2f. I thought he might have the  A/W Finals Mile Championship as his aim bur perhaps not now.
