Best bet for the horse racing Thursday 10th August

I mentioned in the post for Wednesday's racing that with this warm weather you should expect a number of small fields again in the coming days and Salisbury sadly had only 89 runners declared across the two days of its marquee meeting on Wednesday and Thursday. There is a bet to be had there though on Thursday.

Best bet for the horse racing at Salisbury

The Group Three mile Tattersalls Sovereign Stakes at 4.15 is the main event in which Modern News looks a good thing to me. He was a little disappointing at Pontefract last time when third though he was giving the winner 11lb but his two seconds prior to that still look fair as he ran well in the G.3 Diomed Stakes at Epsom and was perhaps unlucky to be second again when headed in the final stride by My Oberon at Windsor over a mile. Sadly, it has cut-up somewhat from the original entry list, as I mentioned earlier this week Chindit looks likely to be at Newbury this weekend for example, and Modern News is very short at 6-5 overnight but I have a bit of that as I think he’ll go odds-on. Trainer Charlie Appleby said this week “Modern News has done well since Pontefract, when the ground unfortunately went against him. He goes into this in good shape and, if he runs up to his form so far this year, it will make him very competitive.” Berkshire Shadow gets the weight-for-age allowance taking on his elders for the first time and is in theory feared most but he hasn't won since he took the Coventry Stakes last year.

Be lucky
