The Cambridgeshire Meeting at Newmarket best bets for day two Friday 28th September
Friday and it’s day two of the Cambridgeshire meeting at HQ Newmarket where they have two Listed races, a Group Three and a couple of Group Two heats on the card. Day one was disappointing with a 3rd and a 2nd, close but no cigar; my fancies for day two follow.
Firstly take note, of the five races over 7f or a mile Thursday the first four winners were drawn on the stands' rail or one off it. It was fast becoming a self-fulfilled prophecy with races such as the Tattersalls Stakes, despite there being only 7 runners, they looked like they went off at breakneck speed the jockeys desperate to get across to that far rail which ruined a few chances. By the seventh, fifth race up the straight, those drawn high shrank in price pretty quickly only to get beat by the one drawn in two!
They start at 1.50 with the Listed Muhaarar British EBF Rosemary Stakes. I quite like chestnut mare Laugh Aloud and was thinking of backing her but she hasn’t looked right this season and the draw in two is a big concern. Unforgettable Filly won very well in a Listed heat last time at Haydock, Agrotera fourth, and if that Unforgettable Filly shows up she would win but she has put in a couple of runs that can only be described as stinkers in the past. I am backing her with fingers crossed at 11-4 that she puts in a similar performance to what we saw at Haydock; being drawn in seven is a big plus looking at Thursday's results.
The Group Three Princess Royal Nayef Stakes over 1m4f could go to Sun Maiden. The filly has been running well in defeat since winning at Salisbury and lost little in defeat when third to Lah To Dar last time. With the weight-for-age allowance, she is my fancy at 11-2 in a fairly open looking race.
The first Group Two is the Rockfel Stakes at 3.00. Yourtimeisnow steps up in class and trip whilst Just Wonderful and Main Edition need to bounce back after below-par performances last time and I honestly think the race is best watched as you couldn’t bet any of that trio confidently.
The Group Two Shadwell Joel Stakes at 3.35 looks to be at the mercy of Mustashry according to the book but I think stablemate Regal Reality could be the one to be one. I thought it was a good effort when he made all in the G.3 Thoroughbred Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on good-firm and he appeared to get bogged down in the heavy at Haydock last time. Open to improvement still I have the 3-1.
I am hopeful Ryan Moore has a big day as I like the look of Communique for the Listed Mukhadram Godolphin Stakes at 4.45 (he’s also on Regal Reality and Sun Maiden). The chestnut gets the weight-for-age allowance and he showed he stays the 1m4f when winning at Newbury last week. I think he can win at this level and I am on at 13-8.
Be lucky
