We are heading into a massive weekend of horse racing with some big races to look forward to but there is the small matter of a bet or two for Friday to deal with first.
Best bets for the horse racing at Ascot
A favourite of mine this season, Secret State, will be looking to continue his excellent season so far when he returns to Ascot for the Listed Noel Murless Stakes. He took the King George V Stakes at the Royal meeting and the chestnut colt had more handicap success at Glorious Goodwood in July – tipped on here for both wins. He tries 1m6f for the first time in this having finished second in the 1m4f G.2 Great Voltigeur Stakes at York’s Ebor festival in August (I tipped him there as well). He has undergone wind surgery since that last run and looks a likely stayer to me with another plus being he has won on soft through to good-firm going. His trainer Charlie Appleby said earlier this week “Secret State has enjoyed a nice break since the Great Voltigeur, when he ran a solid race. His preparation has gone well and we are looking forward to stepping him up to this distance, which could hopefully see more improvement.” I am on at 6-4. Having finished third in the St Leger at Doncaster Giavellotto is the obvious danger.
Hopefully it will be a Charlie Appleby and William Buick double on the card as another I have been on before in the shape of Yantarni goes in the last the mile Smart Signage Display Solutions Handicap Classified Stakes. I didn’t back him last time at odds-on which was handy as he got turned over. I did tip him when he won on his belated three-year-old debut at HQ in August and I will be on here again as I remain convinced there is more to come from this son of Dubawi. He was gelded over the winter and the cheekpieces go on here so it’s clear he has his quirks but also has some talent and I won’t be surprised to see him running in Pattern class at some point. He has won on soft so the threat of rain is of no concern. I have 9-4 overnight.
